Katarina Peović

Katarina Peović Vuković is an Assistant Professor at Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Cultural Studies in Rijeka (Croatia). She teaches graduate, postgraduate and doctoral seminars on critical theory, media studies, Marxism and psychoanalysis. She holds a BA and masters degree in Comparative literature as well as in Croatian literature and language, and MA and PhD of Faculty of Philosophy Zagreb. She earned her doctorate (under the super vision of N. Katherine Hayles) in 2010 on the problems of new media literacy. She also teaches at the Department of Comparative Literature at Faculty of Philosophy Zagreb and at the Center for Women’s Studies in Zagreb. From 1999 she is an editor of the Croatian literary and theoretically magazine Libra Libera and part of the collective ATTACK! (Autonomous cultural factory, Zagreb). In 2012 she published her study Media and culture. Ideology of media after decentralisation (Zagreb: Naklada Jesenski i Turk) on the paradox of the new media hegemony, and relation of critical theory to new media sociality.

  • Magazines, radio

    • Editor of the literary magazine "Libra Libera", since 1998. Libra Libera - literary magazine for literature and Other is a non-institutional place for literature and critical theory. The list of theoretical concepts promoted in magazine includes: popular culture, cultural studies, new media practices and cyber theory, new ethnography, computer games studies, Balkan studies, queer theory, etc. The magazine is active from 1995. Libra was censored during 1998, so the editors decided to start a new magazine, Libra Libera, published by the Autonomous Culture Factory and to initiate the Movement of student initiatives, a coalition of student groups opposed to the regime. Libra Libera had an important role in the student movement during the late 1990s in Croatia. The magazine is also an initiator of the LitKon collective – a regional network for young writers (http://www.litkon.org).
    • Editor of the Elektrosfera, a show at Third program of Croatian Radio during the 2008 and 2009. The show promoted theory related to new media practices.
